Romance is in the air as Valentine’s Day approaches – and what better way to celebrate than by falling in love with Prokofiev’s music for the most famous lovers of all!
- Prokofiev – Extracts from Romeo and Juliet
- Prokofiev – Extracts from The Love for Three Oranges Suite
de Havilland Philharmonic Orchestra is thrilled to team up with children’s author and illustrator James Mayhew for a double-bill of family concerts this February. As the orchestra plays the spectacular, sweeping repertoire, Mayhew paints his illustrations live before your very eyes, all in perfect synchronicity with the music.
We open with extracts from Sergei Prokofiev’s famous ballet based on Shakespeare’s tragic love story. Composed between 1935 and 1936, Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet remains one of the most celebrated ballets of the 20th Century. The orchestra performs extracts capturing key moments of the drama – from tender, romantic themes to intense, dramatic clashes – bringing the timeless tale of Romeo and Juliet to life through sound.
The St Valentine's theme continues with extracts from Prokofiev’s fairytale masterpiece The Love for Three Oranges. A lively and whimsical opera full of humour, magic, and fantasy, the story follows a prince’s strange and funny quest to find three enchanted oranges.
This dynamic, enchanting concert is not to be missed!
Please note that there will be two 60-minute performances on the day, one starting at 14:00 and one at 16:00. Please choose your preferred time from the dropdown menu when booking.
There will also be a book sale and a charity raffle taking place in the foyer on the day, where you will have the chance to win the paintings that Mayhew creates during the show and buy some of his lovely books. The proceeds from the raffle will be donated to a charity of Mayhew’s choosing.
