Enjoy a sensational summer finale by our talented de Havilland Philharmonic Orchestra!

  • Tchaikovsky – Francesca da Rimini
  • Rachmaninov – Symphony No. 2 in E Minor

We begin by plunging into the fiery depths of Dante’s Inferno with Tchaikovsky’s Francesca da Rimini, a dramatic symphonic poem inspired by a tale of forbidden love and eternal punishment. Following a visit to Wagner’s Bayreuth Festival and having listened to Liszt’s Dante Symphony, Tchaikovsky was compelled to compose his own musical vision of Francesca’s tragic fate. Swept up in an illicit romance with her husband’s brother, Francesca and her lover are discovered and murdered, condemning them to whirl through the stormy winds of Hell for eternity. Tchaikovsky captures this torment and passion in a swirling, intense and deeply moving work.

The season closes in grand style with Rachmaninov’s Symphony No. 2 – a sweeping masterpiece of late Romanticism, overflowing with yearning melodies, sumptuous harmonies, and emotional depth. First performed in 1908 under the composer’s baton in St Petersburg, the symphony was a resounding success and earned him the prestigious Glinka Prize. Once heavily cut for length in the mid-20th century, our orchestra honours the composer’s full vision by performing the complete, unabridged version.

A perfect concert to bring our season to a glorious close!
