UH Arts is committed to offering opportunities for students, families and independent adults to participate actively in our workshops, events and exhibitions. You are invited to use our programmes as stimuli for your own ideas and to encourage you to co-produce new work with our artists and facilitators.
For schools workshops please follow link to Get Involved / Schools.
Students from the University of Hertfordshire and beyond can access a wide range of creative and professional development opportunities through UH Arts.
1-day artist projects
UH Arts commission artists to create 1-day artist projects for students, staff and public visitors. Participants contribute to a collaborative piece of artwork in the Art & Design Gallery.
Delivering art workshops
There are many opportunities for students to get involved in the delivery of our art and theatre workshops. We have strong connections to the School of Education and collaborate with their students to deliver workshops for events such as the Big Draw.
JamJar: School of Creative Arts
Students participate in an academically assessed exercise in event management, production and live engineering through our JamJar event programme. Additionally, students are offered a variety of work experience and portfolio building opportunities.
Students are invited to contribute to the creative process in developing our theatre commissions. Our professional theatre companies will workshop ideas and offer valuable insights into this exciting industry.
UH Arts symposiums and courses
In conjunction with the exhibition programme, UH Arts regularly host adult events including symposiums, study-days, master-classes and courses. Highlights include a study-day that explored ideas in Sightlines – Public and Private (Lives), Julie Cook (5 December 2015) and Artists’ Writing and Writing for Artists course, hosted by duo Akerman Daly (December 2015-January 2016) to support those writing about their own artistic practice and that of others.

Courses are offered in the following areas:

UH Arts welcomes families with young children onto the University of Hertfordshire campuses. The visual arts, performing arts and music programmes feature special events for children throughout the year.
- An annual visual arts celebration of drawing as part of the Big Draw national event.
- Our family programme at the Western Auditorium boasts nationally renowned touring theatre. Performances are extended through creative workshops for children and their families, held before or after the main presentation.
- A popular event in the calendar is our family concert performed by our resident orchestra the de Havilland Philharmonic. For over 10 years children’s author and illustrator James Mayhew has collaborated with the orchestra to paint illustrations live on stage while the orchestra play.
